Life is a gamble, but that doesn’t mean you should encourage it.
I get it that some people see this as a way out, where all circumstances seems like they’re not within your control anymore, why stop at a little risk-taking?
The wave of euphoria between “YES!!” and “NO!!” is too much for me to handle, even as a spectator. However, the thrill can be addicting to others. Here’s what the ‘expert’ discovered: that dopamine hit comes right before the activity, not during, not after.
If you’re craving for ordering in excessive food, go ahead and place the order. But right before the payment page, close it. Or better yet, don’t put any money into that account so you have no way of paying without topping up. You will have gotten your hit but not suffer the consequence of your actions, because technically none has been taken.
If it’s a number bet, why not try making that bet, leave your wallet at home and take it to the counter, and when it’s time to pay, take it right back because how else are you going to pay? If it’s a slot machine, why not try inserting some plastic coins to pretend that you have gambled, and let the machine spit the coin back out?
They’re not sound advice, but for the chronic gamblers, I hope it’s worth a shot.
