I always keep it real, just not ultra-specific.
I can say I love jazz, but I only listen to a few
specific types of jazz and am obsessed with just 2-3 artists. Not all jazz
sounds euphoric to me (sorry).
So, what happens if you take that as a proxy for who I am, and proceed to investigate what makes me, me?
You calculate your
moves, read up my horoscope sign, dig out my old public Spotify playlist from
years ago and are thrilled that you’ll get the upper hand in forming an
alliance with me first before anyone else.
Now I’m confused as to why do you talk to me about liking Michael BublĂ© and Etta James songs and mentioned some key things that sounded..AI generated (?) and I can see you dropping all these hints begging me to agree with you.
And I guess you wanted me to squeal in
delight that I’ve somehow found my new best friend?
Does no one catch on what this ‘AI robot’ is
trying to do?
That's probably the first and most insincere interaction I've ever encountered that I still thought about it to this day because of how sad and bewildered the whole thing was. (Given the motive, I think it did a tremendous job in leaving an impression).
Then I see this ‘AI robot’ doing the exact same thing to others and somehow it works and now there’s ample of people who’ve had this sort of interaction before going head over heels in trying to win over this robot.
Maybe I’m the only one who’s never actually read Dale Carnegie’s book and executed those ideas in real life.
I play along because I've read those chapters before and act accordingly to what this robot's motive is, and later vowed to myself that never would I ever do this to anyone. That's a potential, future CEO that I'm talking to, so most probably I'm the one socializing wrong the whole time. I'm the one who's downright anti-social anyway.
Maybe no one could feel it, but I can. And I hope I’ll never make anyone feel the same way as I did.
I felt so violated of my personal space, even though nothing this ‘AI’ robot assumed about me was remotely correct. It was straight out generalization and that’s how algorithms work: the longer you spend on the app, the more it knows you to curate the content that suits you most.
